Nearly Race Day!

I have been quiet I know. The last time I sat down at my computer to write anything was almost 2 weeks ago! Various reasons….been feeling tired, and a bit meh…. This week we were away in Auckland and Colville. I have still been training, had a few hamstring niggles, went for 2 painful massages! It was almost as if I got the 35km run done and thought to myself “That’s it! Job done!” Not so….

I have a new toy, a Garmin Forerunner 410. I used it on Sunday for my final long run and again today. Why did I not buy this toy earlier? It is so simple to plan and do your runs, so easy to upload the info when you’re done. The only downside is the size of it. I have VERY small wrists, so have to use the smallest watch strap while the watch itself is HUGE, so no wearing of this one other than while running.

This week is final taper week. I am enjoying the severe shortage of runs. Today I went for a 6km trot, on Friday I will do 5km. Then Sunday is Race Day! I am going to wear my new toy as it tells me my pace, however I need to figure out how to drive it properly as I don’t want it beeping at me each km and reminding me that I still have screeds of kms left. I am hoping the weather will be good, and warmer than here. A few runs I have done lately, it has felt as if my face is going to fall off, it’s been that cold. On two mornings last week I was running along the boardwalk and it was covered in frost. I am hoping I can walk properly after the race, as when I did the Auckland Marathon, I had such sore feet I couldn’t walk properly for 2 days afterwards. I am dosing myself with Vit C so I don’t catch any bugs.

We leave for the Gold Coast on Friday morning, driving up to Auckland Airport for our flight. Perhaps I am starting to feel just a little bit excited…..

And So The Taper Begins

Sunday was the biggest long run in my training programme. 35km run mostly in the rain. The plus side was it wasn’t too cold, the minus side was it was windy! So in the end it felt a lot longer, and it showed in my time….3hrs 51mins.

Afterwards I was soaked, but glad it was all over. I had done that illusive distance, I knew that the final hurdle had been leapt over and now there was just the slow winding down to Marathon Day! The rest of the training until then should be a doddle, right? Wrong! Monday I was tired – I did not want to do my strength workout, but I did it in the end. Yesterday I did an 8km recovery run – my legs felt like lead and I was feeling sluggish! Today I did a 14km run with km repeats – I couldn’t wait for it to finish! What am I going to feel like by week three of my taper?

I can only think that my body is tired, and possibly this taper is timed excellently as the gradual ease off of distance will give it the chance to recuperate and strengthen before race day on July 7. Hopefully I have not over-trained, hopefully I am not short on nutrition or dehydrated, I guess the next couple of weeks will tell. It’s now time to eat well, keep hydrated and if I need a few extra rest days…..I had better listen to my body and take them ūüôā

Another Go At Yasso 800s

Today was another Yasso 800 day….I did too many! I was supposed to do 6 and I did 8….oh well. I shall just cut my easy run on Saturday short as I don’t want to overstress my body. It’s already grumbling…..

I thought I would put in a link that explains the Yasso 800. I have found them a fun workout, even though I still go to fast. According to Burt Yasso, you can predict your marathon time by seeing how fast you run the 800 in. According to today I should run the Gold coast Marathon in 4 hours…..I somehow don’t think this is going to happen ūüôā

Poised At The Bottom Of The Hill

Today I got wet…well I should rather say soaked! I had about one hour left of my long run (today was 24km) and the rain came down. At one stage it was quite painful! Stoically I kept going, the result being I ran too fast once again, and I was dripping, sloshing and squishing by the time I finished and reached the shelter of my hubby’s car. I did think to myself that had I been doing next Sundays run of 35km, I may have given up…or would I?

Today also marks four weeks to go until the Gold Coast Marathon. Finally I am feeling excited. Due to the weather (it has not stopped raining since 9am!) I have been preparing my taper and subsequent carb load by entering all the relevant information into my training sheet. It feels good to have it all down on paper so it’s out of my head, which leaves room for other thoughts. Like the fact that I am poised of the eve of my biggest training week ever! This week marks an 81km week culminating in the 35km long run on Sunday.

Now, if you have been following my blog since last year, you may remember that at this stage in the build up to the Auckland Marathon I became ill and had to miss out the 35km planned run, so I never did the big week and long run, and consequently I am feeling a little apprehensive about my body’s ability to cope with the (in my mind) massive mileage. No doubt I shall be fine, but I am nonetheless nervous about it. What helps me though, is the knowledge that after that the taper begins, and so the next big run is the race itself! All I have to do is get through this week and all will be fine.¬†I feel like I am poised at the bottom of a steep hill, looking up to the top where Sundays run lurks, and then on to the other side where the taper is waiting until the final climb of the race and the ultimate relief of the recovery week.

Head Games

Yesterday was the second planned 32km run in my training program in the lead up to the GC Marathon. After the previous week I was mildly dreading it (if you can mildly dread something).  I got out of bed to have my breakfast and was not in the mood at all to run. It is not something that happens to me often, so I am thinking I really do not enjoy the long training hours you have to put in to run a marathon. Needless to say, I am committed, so I will see this through.

The temperatures have dropped considerably, and they are not consistent. It is difficult to gauge whether ¬†the sun will come out/stay out or if the wind will pick up. This makes it difficult to decide what running gear to wear. Yesterday looked as if it was going to be sunny, but the temperature reading for outside was only 7 deg C, so I put on a long sleeved running top. I am very glad I did that, for as the morning progressed, the sun disappeared and it got colder. At least it didn’t rain….

The first part of my run went really well. I was feeling fresh and strong and enjoying the view as I had taken a different route to avoid a race being held at my normal finishing spot. Unfortunately my foot started troubling me again, and I am now wondering if it is my shoes, as it only seems to happen in that one pair when I reach about 45mins into my run. It is something I will have to figure out this weekend when I use the other pair for my long run. Even though it was hurting I was still feeling upbeat until I reached that magic time mark (just past 2hrs 30min) where I started to get slower and slower and question my sanity. Whether it was a factor of my sore foot, or just that “I am over this” attitude, or a combination of the two, there it was, looming over me like a little black cloud as I ran down the road. And once again I had to talk to myself quite sternly to get myself going again.

As I neared the end of the run, it felt like I had not run the distance I needed (it turned out when checking MapMyRun I had messed up somehow and added about 1.5km in a backwards and forwards move on one street when I plotted my route the day before) but by then my shin had started to hurt quite a bit (no doubt as a result of my foot being sore) and I decided to call it quits and walk the rest of the way home. In the end I ran 30.5km and I am quite happy with that.

I still have one more very long run to do before I taper down to race weekend. I am going to have to employ all sorts of positive mind games on myself before I tackle it. The frame of mind I am in right now is not the best for self motivation. I keep telling myself this time, 5 weeks from now, I will be basking in the self-appointed glory of finishing my second (and last!) road marathon.

Winter Weather and Wild Wind!

The cold weather has arrived….

Last week I got wet during two runs, this week I froze! It has certainly been a quick smart kick into the winter weather.

On Thursday I ran a 16km loop with 11km at marathon pace. it was a bit drizzly at the start of the day, but when it came time for me to head out, it had cleared somewhat. The temperatures was a bit cold however so I donned my running vest to keep my core warm, and popped on my beanie….first time this year. It was a pretty grey day, but in the distance the sun was trying to come out. As I was running along it finally made an appearance, but it was not for long. A big, black cloud started to roll in and just when I was in the final 5km of my run, it just started pelting down and I arrived back at my start point totally soaked.

Sunday was my long run, 32km. Luckily the weather was fine, as rain had been predicted and so I didn’t get wet. I did however, have to employ all sorts of self motivational techniques to keep me going past the 2hr 30min mark. That seems to be my sticking point, and although I drink water and eat my gels, I still flag at that point. I was using my arms a lot, pumping them in time to my breathing and that seemed to keep me going. I know it’s all in my head, as when I know the end of the run is coming, I have energy enough to speed up and charge to the finish. The mind is an amazing thing! Actually I just read an article about exactly that which said that we can all actually run faster, harder, longer etc., it’s just that our brains tell our bodies we can’t do it. Kind of a self preservation thing. I guess it’s only bad when your brain works so well all you do is sit on the couch!

And so we come to this week…..and with it winter! Tuesday was my first run this week, and I set off after training my PT client in the park (freezing) for a 14km run. I had my running vest on again as it was about 7 deg C, but not too long into the run the sun came out and stayed out for a while until I was feeling rather hot. So off came the vest and on I trotted, until…..goodbye went the sun and hello to the freeze again! When I eventually finished all I wanted to do was have a hot shower and something warm to drink. I got both, eventually.¬†This cold weather was here to stay, at least for the week. Predictions of strong winds and cold temperatures for the following day were not making my early morning run look like a good prospect. So I went to bed wondering about the morning.¬†As predicted, the next morning was freezing (5 deg C) and the wind was howling. So I opted for the next best option…make pancakes for breakfast. That was way better! (I did get my run in later that day after spending the day at a first aid refresher course under the heater)

And so we come to today, still freezing, but no wind, so no excuses this time. I did my strength workout and headed out for an easy 6km trot. It was only 3 deg C when I left and it felt like my face was going to fall off, and I ran too fast because it was cold and I wanted to get back home quickly. But I did it and that’s all that matters as the GC Marathon is only 5 1/2 weeks away and that’s not really very long!

A Teeny Blip

I am in a quandary. It seems I may have a teeny umbilical hernia. This is definitely NOT part of my planned lead up to the GC Marathon!

On Tuesday evening I got up from watching TV and noticed a tender area just below my belly button. There was a small lump there and my hubby suggested it may be a hernia. My brain refused to accept this and so I decided to wait until today to see if it went away. This is typical of me as I am not one to go screaming and yelling to the doctor at the slightest, or even more serious, sniffle or twinge. I prefer to see if my body will heal itself, as it should.

Anyway, I continued with my training on Wednesday and come yesterday morning as I was heading out for my 16km run, my friend also suggested it may be a hernia. So after my run I succumbed and rang the doctor and got an appointment for that evening. And so she also suggested it may be a very small hernia (it really is less than the size of a pea) and has written me a referral to the specialist. So now I wait for an appointment.

In the interim, my doctor thinks its fine that I continue to run, as she knows I am training for the GC, but I am now worried I may do more damage by doing this. I have a long 32km run on Sunday coming up and I don’t want to miss it. I also don’t want to make myself worse! And all this is whizzing around in my head as it is not a confirmed diagnosis yet.

So today I am in a quandary, which is possibly why I am procrastinating with doing my workout for today (strength and 6km easy run) as I am not sure if it is a good idea.

My Adventure With Yasso 800’s

I don’t normally post two days in a row but¬†today’s¬†experience warranted a write up!

Today’s training session called for 14km with 4 x Yasso 800’s. The training plan I am following came out of the Runner’s World magazine, and has instructions for each type of run. I have never done Yasso 800’s before, or any kind of Yasso anything, so this was all new to me. I realised I would have to go to a track, luckily we have a very nice one,¬†thank you, here in Tauranga.

I realised as well that doing 4 of these Yasso 800’s meant I had to run 4.8km around and around the track. Given my boredom scale of repetitive running, I was a bit worried. The second thing that worried me was that I had to complete 2 loops of said track in 4.30 mins, as I had to run at my marathon time (I am planning a 4 1/2 hr marathon). Regardless, I am the sort of¬†person¬†who will complete a training programme almost to the letter, and it is only severe illness or perhaps loss of a limb that would stop me from doing what I have to. So I set out to do the biggest part of the run around the Waikareao Estuary (you can see the water in the photo of the track). As I trotted around I continued to feel a bit worried about my ability to complete these Yasso 800’s after running for about 8km first…at least my foot was feeling okay.

And so I reached the track. I stopped my watch and stopped running and had a look at the task ahead of me. Okay, no point wasting time, get on a marker and go, get running. And so I set off a t a colossal pace and was winded by 300m. I looked at my watch and realised I was  going way too fast and had to try for the rest of the 500m to get into a rhythm that would be sustainable and on time target. What came to my rescue was the new breathing technique, and I found that by doing the 2 in and one out breath sequence on the 800m faster loops and the 3 in and 2 out on the 400m recovery, I pretty much nailed it. I was running a little fast, but hey, I might run the marathon a bit faster that 4hr30min too! My foot did start hurting on the second 800, but after getting worse to the point I thought I would have to stop, the pain abated quite a bit and I was able to carry on. (Like I said, it would probably have to fall off!)

The best part about today’s training session was that I really enjoyed running around the track, it was something different. As I jogged back to my car I felt happy and satisfied¬†with¬†a job well done. The cherry on top was bumping into my hubby and going to the cafe for a coffee and a bite to eat. So even though today was one of those grey, cold days, I didn’t even notice! How fantastic is that!

What A “Beep” Run That Was

I am so tired today! Yesterday I ran 30km but it felt like 132km! What a run that was…..

I woke up feeling quite good, apart from the fact that it seemed as if I had some sort of mouth infection. I had breakfast as usual about an hour before I was due to head off and pottered around getting gels, water and myself ready. When it came time to leave I¬†noticed¬†there were some very black clouds in the sky but I¬†figured¬†I was eventually heading in a different direction, and they didn’t appear to be moving too fast towards our house.

Now, on my long run days my hubby always comes to meet me at the end point of my run. With him he brings chocolate milk and my bag (packed by me) with a change of clothes etc in it. Then after I have stretched and changed into dry clothes we go to a cafe, have a bite to eat and coffee – great way to end a long run. This aside is relevant as while heading up the road (just walking at this stage) I have this feeling I have forgotten something. I get halfway to the start point of my run and realise I have not packed dry underwear into my bag…..so back I went. This then made me start later than I had said, and as we always fix an approximate time to meet at the end, now put pressure on me to run quicker, as Mr was still snoring when I left. I don’t carry a phone with me when I run, and had not¬†thought to leave a note as I just dashed in the laundry door, grabbed¬†some things out of the basket, flung them into my bag and dashed back out and up the road.

And I was right…..

5 mins into my run it just bucketed down and I was drenched! My shoes were squishing and I was dripping! However, I was running 30km and there was no stopping me, so I forced myself to grin (lucky no-one was around) and carried on. The route I had picked was a bit hilly and I had said previously I was not doing any more hills. It is a bit hard to find a long route with no hills in Tauranga, unless you run down the main road and over to Mount Maunganui or Papamoa, but that can be boring, so I had planned a route with as few hills as possible to get the 30km done. For some reason these hills took me down yesterday (probably because I was pushing for time), and by the time I reached a flat section I was questioning my sanity to the extent I was thinking of stopping, grumbling to myself about the fact I had been running for 2 hours already and why was I doing this. Having conversations with myself about me being more suited to 21km and 10km distances, why am I training for another marathon, all this training is too much, etc, etc, etc. I think I psyched myself out so much that everything started to hurt and my legs felt heavier and heavier. I slogged on though, and finally with the end in sight, still managed to give it a surge at the end. I ended up exhausted for the rest of the day and managed to strain my foot as well.

I think this run¬†highlighted some things to me about my running. I seriously do not think I am cut out to do marathons. I get bored with the time spent training, hours and hours of plodding (or at least that’s how I see it). I don’t run with anyone, and maybe in a¬†group¬†the tediousness¬†of those long runs gets brushed aside in the chatting that must go on, but I don’t like running in a group, so it wouldn’t work for me. I enjoy the faster running, it’s over quicker, more exciting. I enjoy trail running, especially fast downhills, I prefer the training for shorter distances. So this marathon is definitely my last, and I have a way to make it seem easier. As my hubby and I were supposed to run the GC Half together and now he can’t, I am running the other half for him, and that will keep me going through the final 7 weeks of training.

Still Breathing

I think I am getting the hang of this new breathing technique, although I still find myself reverting back to my old way when I totally zone out. Today I tried using the count of 10 and that seemed to work better. In for 1-2-3, out 4-5, in 6-7-8 and out 9-10. I am also finding I have started to run a bit faster, well quite a lot faster, and I am wondering if this has to do with this new way of breathing. Supposedly, it is supposed to have an impact on your speed.

There is a little over 7 weeks to go until the GC Marathon now, and this coming Sunday I do the first of the 30km+ runs scheduled in my training programme. I am both excited and looking at it with some trepidation as this run will be done on my new shoes that have the 4mm heel-toe offset, a lot lower than what I ran my first marathon in. I am sure it will be okay, seeing as I have been slowly coming down from the traditional running shoe height. Next thing I need to do is¬†buy¬†a second pair as I am rotating with the old 8mm ones at present, not so good….

The other reason I am feeling a little trepidation for my long run on Sunday is that the weather forecast is for rain, and I am not such an “in the rain” runner. I like coolish, sunny weather for running, but then I guess that’s most of us runners!
