Temporary Home, Temporary Coffee Corner

We have moved to Auckland. Yesterday we drove up with our two suitcases, bags of food, one chilly bin and our coffee machine and grinder. These last two items were very important and could not be packed into the truck for storage with all our other stuff. I must confess to being a bit of a coffee snob, and can’t drink instant anymore. So of course, before every early morning run, there is the whole routine that must be carried out – grinding, tamping, expressing and of course enjoying!

This morning was no different except that the coffee machine and everything that goes with it, is balanced on a slightly rickety table and seems to make even more noise than usual.

That’s my hubby making his coffee šŸ™‚

Coffee and a slice of toast consumed I headed out for my run which was a slow one today…..all the way up a long hill, into Totara Park and up and down the bridal path. I had to walk some of the hills as they were just too steep for my legs today. I did try to find the bridge that my hubby fell off of on his mountain bike, but I piked out as I realised I would have to run up yet another hill. Perhaps in a few days time I may try again.

I did noticed that everyone exercising in the park was very friendly, something that didn’t happen as much in Tauranga. You would think that a smaller town would be more friendly and a city a bit more impersonal, but that wasn’t my experience today. It made me feel welcomed and right at home.

I am two weeks down on my weight loss program and all seems to be going well. I have stuck it out and I think the effort is starting to pay off. I have two weeks left on the program, each week gets a little more intense so I also need to remember to relax a little in between running a few different routes and finding a job. In two weeks we move into our new home. Then comes the unpacking…….and I am still looking at doing the Auckland Half Marathon.

Almost On The Move

Two more sleeps in our old house. Then we’re on the move. On Tuesday the movers come in to pack us up and then on Wednesday they uplift all our possessions for storage. Tomorrow the cats go into the cattery (I keep referring to it as jail, and my hubby says they’re going on holiday. I think it’s more like jail as they are not vaccinated so have to stay in an isolation room). Tuesday we move into a motel for three nights and then on Friday we leave for Auckland. The last week I have spent throwing out stuff, donating stuff, organising stuff, and still I have been getting my runs in. Thank goodness for some small sanity in all the madness.

Yesterday I went for my “long” run. It really wasn’t that long, only an hour. I am doing a trim down program and this last week took me back a notch with the distances, and put me on a time and RPE scale instead. I have tried this program before and then got sidetracked by something, and ended up only doing one week. This time I am determined to see the four weeks through and so have completed week one with a rest day and a sense of a job well done. I cheated a bit as I went for a walk with my daughter today and we walked rather quickly around the Mount Maunganui base track (her speed, not mine).

This week I have done hill repeats, a tempo run, a relaxed time trial, a moderate run, a long run and two resistance sessions with moderately heavy weights and I am feeling pretty good.

Next week I have more of the same, only more reps and longer times.

While I was running yesterday I realised that this was the last long run I would be doing here, that the next one I did and all the others after that will be in Auckland. It is quite exciting to have a new area to be running in, and it will be a challenge. I can only hope to get stronger as Auckland is not very flat, so you get to do a lot more hills as part of a normal daily run. The best part of being up there will be that there are a lot more events to enter, like the Colour Run which I plan to do, and…I am still on the lookout for an Auckland Half Marathon entry…..

The Week That Was

My cruisy time is continuing. Last week I even missed a run as I just didn’t feel like getting up. Granted it was a little bit too windy and rainy and seeing I am not training for anything I did not feel there was any reason to put myself through it. It seems I have always been training for something, and to find myself without a race goal was at first a bit weird. I know I said in my last post I would think of a goal, and I do have one, but it’s not a race. I am on a healthy eating kick with the aim of losing those few kilos I tried to lose after the Auckland Marathon last year. Those kilos never left, luckily I didn’t add any either.

This last week I have done a bit of different exercise again. I biked into the gym once more and actually went swimming – laps – at the Mount Hot Pools. This is something I will not be repeating as those hot pools are salt water, and after 30 laps I felt like I had swallowed a bag of salt! Yuck! I shall stick to aqua jogging there or find another pool tp swim laps in. Or maybe I’ll just go there and wallow. I do think I shall incorporate a bit more cross-training of an aerobic nature into my daily exercise for a bit, I think this body could do with a rest from all the running. And having been not doing so much running has helped me run faster when I do, so that’s a bonus.

Also as we are on the move to Auckland, being a bit flexible with my program is good, as I won’t feel so bad if I miss a session or change something. And regarding that move….we actually found and bought a house! After weeks of stress looking at open homes, going to auctions and getting disappointed, we managed to get an offer accepted on our new home, so yay for that! We have just over one week left here and then we’re off! It has been an eventful week indeed.

And just as I said I don’t have a race goal in mind…..I am keeping a lookout for a half marathon entry to the Auckland Marathon, so if anyone knows of one going, let me know

A Snapshot Of My Current Journey

I am just a little over half way through my first week of my weight loss month and so far the workouts have been fun. To let you in on a snapshot of my month, each week looks like this:

Day 1: EPOC run

Day 2: Strength workout

Day 3: Relaxed time trial

Day 4: Fat-burning run

Day 5: Strength workout

Day 6: Fasting run

Day 7: Rest

My day one falls on a Tuesday, so my rest day is a Monday. I like to have Monday off and just do some stretching exercises and maybe a walk if I get a bit fidgety.

Each week gets a little harder, and follows the FITT principle to some degree (the frequency does not change in the 4 weeks). If you would like a description of the workouts I can send them to you.

I am enjoying the new training programme and am also enjoying addressing my nutrition. I have found that planning what meals I am going to eat a week in advance, has kept me on track and I am starting to feel the results. There are many resources out there with regard to eating and it really is a matter of seeing what will work for you. I have been wheat free for a few months now, which in all reality has made me choose gluten free options. In addition I am experimenting with different options for the grain based meals. For instance tonight I am making a bolognaise mince, but will be putting it onto a kumara and cauliflower mash (now Iā€™m hungry!)

Another thing I started 8 days ago is a 21 day meditation journey. I am finding this a great help with becoming aware of bad habits. I started this mainly because I do not sleep very well, and put this down to being too hyped up and worried about stuff. Seems like I can switch it all off when I run though…..now I have to learn to switch it off at night!

So there is a lot going on this month for me, but so far I am enjoying it and looking forward to popping out the other end and looking back on my achievement and then what will I do? Celebrate!
